Here are five design choices worth considering for a custom home or remodel:
1. Wide-plank hardwood: Wide boards can make an open room feel calmer and more continuous. Careful layout matters because plank width, room shape, transitions, and the condition of the subfloor all affect the finished look.
2. Natural and light-toned finishes: Natural oak tones and other lighter finishes work well with many cabinet, wall, and stone colors. They can keep a room feeling bright without drawing attention away from the rest of the interior.
3. Herringbone and other detailed layouts: Herringbone, diagonal floors, borders, and inlays can add definition to an entry, dining room, or other feature area. These patterns require accurate measurements and patient installation.
4. The right material for the space: Solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, LVP, and laminate each have different requirements. The best choice depends on the subfloor, room conditions, desired appearance, and how the space will be used.
5. Low-sheen finishes: Matte and low-sheen surfaces are popular because they let the wood grain stand out without a highly reflective look. Product selection and proper care are important for long-term performance.
